I went on a quest to find my high gain dream tone the last six months or so. My favorites were the 5150, BE-OD, Neunaber Neuron, Revv G3, and G4. The G3 is the hands down winner for me. The 5150 can be a little dark and fizzy, where the G3 has a powerful EQ section and has chords sounding much more defined than the 5150.

I hate metal zone sounds, and to me the Uber Metal is a slightly improved version of that; actually fairly good for rythm tones only, but still very compressed and fake-sounding, IMO. I'd rather use the same $ and buy a V-Amp 2 modeller and just run it into an amp's fx loop return and get better distortion -- IMO, of course. Getting decent high gain metal sounds in a pedal is always hard without going into really expensive range. A good example of an 'Amp in a box' for that kind of purpose would be the new MXR 5150, or the Sinvertek No. 5 Distortion, or the Wampler Triple Wreck.

Another example of good gear with a bad rep is the old spiders. I haven't played through one since my spider iii, but when I was in the market for a high gain head, it honestly was neck and neck with a 5150 combo I found used. On the Metal Zone the High was cut ever so slightly, set at just bellow the 12 o'clock position, the Low boosted, also just ever so slightly, to around the 12:30 o'clock position, the Mid Freq set .

It's funny I just watched a couple videos around the Boss Metal Zone. The guy was a bit. silly, but I think you'll like these videos so long as you don't take it too seriously. The first one, How Not to Dial in a Metal Tone is just more of a few pointers about getting a good sound (that will help you be "haired" ;P). He kinda trashes the MT-2, but in this video he does find a pretty good .I played a metal zone for years and years and years and even tried the Waza when it came out (into a Carvin 100w). now I am using an amptweaker fat metal (into a Marshall 100w) Much wider sweet spot, easier to dial in the sound i want, fuller low mids, seperate gain/volume boost with optional mid boost on the pro model.
