The biggest progress in turning is the spinning tool, basically type R inserts on an A- or B-axis live holder. The real application for trochoidal turning is large/deep grooving operations, the kind you'd traditionally do with a round insert. Solidcam and Edgecam both have toolpaths to do this.

Trochoidal milling is still very good if you are uncertain on the alloy/material you are machining, it gives excellent forgiveness if you haven’t got your speeds and feeds correct and also can normally be run without coolant/lube. I've got an old Series II cnc Bridgeport with about the same specs as your machine. 4hp, 40 taper, etc. I use it primarily to profile flat parts from 1/2" thick 1018 CF flat stock.
