I mainly play metal and have the Tech 21 US Metal (Mesa Rectifier in a box) and MXR 5150 Overdrive (EVH 5150 in a box). They are both awesome. Preference between the two is just whether you want to sound like a Mesa or a 5150. There is also the Freidman BE-OD (Freidman brown Eye in a box) that a lot of people have been saying is good (I want one).

I've played plenty of amps from Peavey 6505s to solid state to fender twins to quilter overdrive heads and I keep coming back to wanting a Mesa.
